What I learned in 16 weeks

For the last 16 weeks I have retrained my brain to think a little differently about technology. I really struggled with some of the applications and at times wondered what was the point.
In todays world it is important that I keep learning new and interesting ways to teach my students.
I created this presentation using an application that I really struggled with this semester. I can already see how I can use this in my future classroom and it's not that bad of an app.
Hope you like it.

Professional Learning Network

Professional Learning Network - PLN

3 Ways I intend to Use a PLN

1. In an endeavor to be a lifelong learner I will utilize a PLN as a commitment to myself to continue to strive to always want and be willing to learn.

2. I will use a PLN as a collaboration tool. In a world where time is precious, the use of an online PLN will give me the ability to connect and collaborate with colleagues and experts without the pressures of a face-to-face meeting.

3. The online forum of PLN will allow me to lurk in issues to find the information I may be looking for. While I can use a PLN to lurk I will also use my PLN to share my ideas and strategies with my colleagues.

UDL Infographic

UDL Infographic in the classroom The universal design for Learning is the implementation of certain strategies into a lesson that allows the material to be accessible to all students in the class.
The 3 principles act as basic guidelines for modifications to lessons that most educators do without even thinking about it.
This infographic created on canva.com is a great way to use for implementation of UDL. It offers a way to customize the display of information in a creative and fun way. Vocabulary can be displayed in pictures and symbols allowing for information to be transferred in different ways

Punctuation in Texting
While punctuation for formal writing is imperative, in a text punctuation is less important. Since texting is not to impress the reader with your intellectual abilities, punctuation is more for separating ideas and thoughts. Punctuation in texting has become more about expressing emotion and less about expressing formality. This goes hand in hand with texting for expression and impression.

Does texting make us bad writers?

This is such a controversial topic. For some of us texting is not second nature, and for others lol, b4, lmao and ttyl among many others have become as natural in texting conversation as they have in writing. I believe that texting for our millennials and our GenY population have made writing a harder, and less desirable activity. I don't think that we've become bad writers, I think we have become lazy writers. Why spend 2 minutes writing a whole sentence when you can write a quick acronym and be just as understood?

As well as acronyms texting allows for an almost immediate response, seeing the little box that shows someone is typing becomes frustrating when the incoming text doesn't appear fast enough. We don't want to wait for the response, or take the time to write the whole thing, in anticipation of the others response time. Not only have we become lazy writers, we've become impatient.

Based on some research I have come to reconsider my position on texting as making bad writers. Writing for expression should be accommodated in all its forms. This should include texting. While texting for writing is more conversational writing, it is still the expression of the student. I believe that as an educator that I shouldn't prevent my students from writing in text form, I should however, be prepared to help students edit this expressive writing into a more formal style of writing. Text writing should be encouraged for expression and formal writing for impressing.
